Project Description:

The existing surface consisted of two twelve foot, reinforced concrete lanes in each direction with a four foot mountable median and with integral curbs on both sides. The total roadway width between curbs is 52 feet. The median was removed and the lanes divided into five lanes. The center three lanes are 10 feet wide and the two outside lanes are eleven feet wide. This allows some room to store water during rains and still leave a driving lane. After filling the median, the roadway was resurfaced with two inches of bituminous material. This was tapered at the curb lines to a thickness of one half inch to one inch. This preserved the integrity of the curb and precluded revising grades of approaches and entrances as well as preserving the present drainage structures. The problem of pavement joint reflection through the new pavement was solved very effectively by cementing strips of geotechnical fabric over the concrete pavement joints just prior to paving. Some curb was in bad shape and had to be repaired and/or replaced.
