Project Description:

 

Location and design of improvements for upgrading the existing Kentucky Turnpike from a four-lane facility with a 20 foot wide raised median to interstate standards, including six lanes and a 60 foot wide median.  The project included modification or replacement of 10 bridges, survey, final design, right-of-way plans, right-of-way plans for utilities and contract plans for roadways and bridges.  Three interchanges were redesigned with traffic maintained for all movements at all times and two lanes of through traffic were maintained in each direction on the interstate at all times.  Interchange lighting plans were generated for all three interchanges.

The Consultant was responsible for:

 

1.         All alignment and grade studies for location.

2.         All necessary field surveys.

3.         A design report defining all design features of the project.

4.         All interchange geometrics, drainage and right-of-way requirements for submissions on three interchanges to FHWA for approval.

5.         All necessary office work to provide grade, drain and surfacing plans for construction of the project.

6.         Geotechnical investigations.  (By Sub-Consultant)

7.         All maintenance of traffic plans.

8.         Preparation of drainage situations and calculations and compiling drainage folders for the project.

9.         All structure design. (11 Bridges and 12 Culverts - Estimated Cost $14,010,942.42)

 
10.       Right-of-way plans and right-of-way

            plans for utilities and related services,

            including preparation of deeds and plats

            for each parcel.

11.       Preparing lighting plans for each

            of the three interchanges.

 

The Department was responsible for:

 

1.         Photogrammetric services, including

            manuscripts and cross sections.

2.         All traffic volume projects.

3.         Pavement thickness design.
