Project Description:

This bridge was needed when the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River was relocated around Pikeville.  The project known as the "Cut Thru" eliminated the horseshoe bend that the river made around Pikeville.  The cut thru also carried relocated U.S. Hwy. 23 and the C & O Railroad.  A new bridge was required to carry Kentucky Hwy. 1384 over the new construction.  A five span structure with spans of 86.5', 80', 109', 150', and 109' was selected.  Also a Ramp "D" and Ramp "B" were required to tie-in to the bridge.

The main spans over the river consisted of welded steel plate girders supporting a concrete deck.  Approach spans and ramp spans consisted of prestressed concrete I-beams and cast-in-place beams at the tie-ins.

The main piers at the river were founded on rock while the other substructures were founded on steel point bearing piles.

The design was completed in 1979.  Construction was completed in 1987 and the Pikeville Cut-Thru Dedication was held on October 2, 1987.  The approximate cost of just the bridge was $3,000,000.

Johnson, Depp & Quisenberry's portion of the overall project of which this bridge was a part, won the Consulting Engineers Council of Kentucky "Engineering Excellence Award".
