Description: The Southern Railway crossed
Breckinridge Lane to form an at grade intersection. Due to heavy traffic on Breckinridge Lane, the Kentucky
Department of Transportation decided to four-lane Breckinridge Lane and take
it under the railroad, leaving the railroad grade undisturbed. The railroad requested that the bridge
carry two tracks over Breckinridge Lane and that railroad service not be
interrupted during construction.
While the original track was maintained with sheet piling during
excavation, the bridge for the second track was built. Once completed, the rail traffic was
diverted to the new track while the bridge was constructed for the original
track. The side by side bridges
consisted of a single span of 84 feet.
The framing was made up by using eleven 75 inch deep welded plate
girders with a concrete deck. The
abutments were the breastwall type and were founded on rock. Plans were completed in 1977 and
construction was completed in 1981.
The construction cost of the bridge portion of the project was
$750,000. The
Consultant was responsible for: 1. Complete Roadway and Structure Design
and Plans. 2. Specifications
and cost estimates. 3. A pump station and concrete
conduit were required to provide drainage. The
Department was responsible for: 1. Field surveys. 2. Geotechnical
data. |
