Description : The existing I. C. Gulf Railroad crossed over
U.S. Hwy. 41A on an outdated concrete arch bridge. When the Kentucky Department of Transportation decided to
four-lane U.S. 41A, a new bridge was needed.
A temporary run-around or
shoo-fly was also required to bridge over the highway in order for it to
remain open to traffic during construction.
The permanent bridge consisted of a two span structure carrying a single track. The two
53 foot spans were supported by welded steel plate girders measuring 47
inches deep. The reinforced concrete deck accommodated a
trough for the ballasted track and sidewalks on both sides. The substructure
units consisted of vaulted breastwall abutments and a solid concrete pier. The live load was for Coopers E80. The
temporary bridge was an eleven span
structure made up of timber pile
bents and steel and timber stringers.
The deck was an open type with
ties supported by the stringers.
Plans were completed in 1977 and construction was completed in
1979. The cost of the combined
permanent and temporary bridge was $715,000. The
Consultant was responsible for: The Department was
responsible for: 1. Complete
design and details for the structure. 1. Field surveys. 2. Specifications and cost estimates. 2. Geotechnical data. |
