Project Technician: JAMES T. HAGAN,
L.S., DESIGN TECHNICIAN Project Description: Phase I of this project included surveys, preparation
of a Location/Design Study and preparation of an Environmental
Assessment. Three alternatives were
considered in the study: (1) a
relocation crisscrossing the existing road, (2) widening and resurfacing the
existing road and (3) widening and resurfacing with grade improvements. The south end terrain was close-spaced
hills in a rural wooded area. The
north end of the relocation left the existing road crossing a railroad cut to
provide new access to Thebes. It then
followed the Mississippi River bank until connecting with the existing
highway at the levee north of Sexton Creek.
Both wetlands and eagle roosts were involved in this part of the
project. Phase II of the project
included preparing construction plans in two sections for the 4.6 mile length
south of Thebes including a multi-box culvert, and staged construction plans
for maintaining traffic with earthwork balances for each stage. The
Consultant was responsible for: 1. Field
surveys. 2. Preparation of a Location/Design Study and DBE preparation of an Environmental Assessment. 3. All necessary office work to provide grade, drain, surfacing plans and special
provisions for construction of the south project in two grading sections
and one paving contract. 4. Maintenance
of traffic plans, including staged
construction details and detours. 5. Hydraulic
analyses of multi-box culvert
situations and preparation of drainage
calculations and folders. 6. Structural
design of multi-box culverts
and slope-tapered inlets. 7. Pavement
design. 8. Signing
