Project Description:

FA 405 was a new route that crossed the existing C & NW Railroad requiring a grade separation.  The railroad was carried over the highway and a temporary shoo-fly was used to maintain rail traffic during construction.  FA 405 was in a curved alignment and intersected the railroad at a 45 degree angle.  The railroad was in a tangent.  The bridge consisted of four spans of 45', 112.5', 112.5' and 49'.  The framing consisted of four steel welded plate girders with an 84" deep web plate and a steel plate deck to hold the ballast.  The bridge was designed for Coopers E-80 live load.  Approximately 450 tons of A36 steel were required for the superstructure.  The substructure units consisted of solid piers and pile abutments.  Bridge plans were completed in 1978 and construction was completed in 1982.  The approximate cost of the bridge was $1,500,000.
