Description: FA 405 was a new route that crossed the existing C & NW Railroad requiring
a grade separation. The railroad was carried over the highway
and a temporary shoo-fly was used to maintain rail traffic during
construction. FA 405 was in a curved
alignment and intersected the railroad at a 45 degree angle. The railroad was in a tangent. The bridge
consisted of four spans of 45', 112.5',
112.5' and 49'. The framing consisted of four steel welded plate girders with
an 84" deep web plate and a steel
plate deck to hold the ballast.
The bridge was designed for Coopers E-80 live load. Approximately 450 tons of A36 steel were
required for the superstructure. The substructure units consisted of solid piers and pile abutments. Bridge plans were completed in 1978 and
construction was completed in 1982.
The approximate cost of the bridge was $1,500,000. The
Consultant was responsible for: 1. Providing
surveys. 2. Complete
Roadway and Structure Design and Plans. 3. Specifications and cost estimates. 4. Checked all shop plans during construction. The
Illinois Department of Transportation was responsible for: 1. Soil
borings. |
